a psychoanalysis of hamlet

Hamlet, as a character, can quite easily be described using one word: emo. He is a sad man, overwhelmed with grief at the death of his father. He is a madman, speaking in crazed speech, unknown if it is genuine or an act. He is a contradiction of melancholic and insane.

Emo kids are known for their introspection, as they often delve into their own feelings and emotions, seeking to understand themselves better. This is evident in the music they listen to, which often deals with themes of sadness, heartbreak, and self-reflection. Bands such as My Chemical Romance, Panic! At the Disco, and Evanescence were hugely popular among emo kids in the 2000s, and their music often contained lyrics that resonated with the emo ethos. The song “Helena” by My Chemical Romance, the first song on the playlist embedded in the website, has a chorus that goes, "So long and goodnight, so long and goodnight." This line encapsulates a sense of finality and loss that emo kids often feel, as if they are saying goodbye to something or someone forever, similar to the grief Hamlet expresses regarding his father, and perhaps Ophelia. Another song, Evanescence's "Everybody's Fool”, captures the sense of hypocrisy and deceit that Hamlet encounters throughout the play. The line "perfect by nature, icons of self-indulgence" fits with the line by the Ghost, describing the royal bed as “a couch for luxury and damnd incest” in Act 1 Scene 5.

The writing style of the posts by Hamlet on the website are in a style reminiscent of My Immortal, a fan-fiction that has become infamous on the internet for its absurdity and overall bad writing. However, it has gained a cult following due to its unintentional hilarity and its representation of the emo subculture. The protagonist of My Immortal, Ebony Dark'ness Dementia Raven Way, wears all-black clothing, has a tragic backstory, and constantly struggles with her emotions. Through her character, we can see similarities to Hamlet. Both Hamlet and Ebony have tragic backstories that have led them to become depressed and brooding. Hamlet's father is murdered, and his mother marries his uncle, who he believes is responsible for the murder. Ebony's parents died in a car crash, and she is constantly bullied at school. Both characters are burdened by their pasts, and this is a significant factor in their emo characteristics.

Suicidal ideation is common in emo culture, expressed often through music, such as on Get Out’s “Sarcasm” with the lyric “If I had common sense, I'd cut myself or curl up and die,” a ideaology shared by Hamlet multiple times throughout the play, when he is questioning whether “To be or not to be?” in the famous soliloquy in Act 3 Scene 1. Yorick, the court jester whose skull is discovered by Hamlet, is an important symbol of death in the play. In the journal posts on the website, Hamlet is often having to confront death, be it his fathers, Yoricks, or Ophelias, and yet he approaches them with a casualty that may only come with a familiarity with the deceased. Death, and imagery surrounding it, is a common thread amongst emo culture, and what represents death better than a skull? Yorick’s skull represents the transience of life and the inevitability of death. Hamlet’s soliloquy over Yorick’s skull is one of the most famous scenes in the play and is often interpreted as a reflection on mortality. Similarly, the album The Black Parade by My Chemical Romance (from which 4 songs are included on the playlist) deals with death, and a skeleton leading a parade is the album cover. The hidden track, Blood, feels like a fitting conclusion to not just the playlist, but the play as well, given that there are few survivors of the final scene.
